'I am about to apply for a residence and work permit to work in Sweden and travel for a year, I'm an Australian citizen so there is the agreement with our two countries. My only question is whether or not I can apply while I am in the United States, I'm in the USA now and am looking to go straight to Sweden from here, rather then going back to Australia and applying that way. Any information would be great. thanks

As far as I can understand, you can apply at any Swedish Embassy or Consulate, and they will forward the application to the Swedish Migration Board for processing. The Swedish Embassy in Canberra do their own processing, so I would expect handling time to be a lot shorter if you apply there. Please check with your nearest Swedish Consulate - the US ones are listed in the below link from the Swedish Embassy web site in Washington DC.
